Who You Know.
People.
They are gifts. Family and friends? We are rich, indeed. For this exercise, I am going to ask you to do a little reaching out. Who knows? You may be surprised by what you find. Better yet, you may brighten someone’s day.
Activity:
Today, I am encouraging you to write a letter. In this letter, I would like for you to ask five questions of your choice. There are no perfect questions, but there is always a starting point.
Things Needed:
1. Writing utensil
2. Paper or card
3. Envelope
4. Stamp
The beauty of a letter:
Think of someone in your family who you would like to get to know a little better. Maybe there is an uncle you have not spent much time with, or maybe you have some questions for someone you have seen quite often. We are all so full of stories, yet many of these stories and little tidbits of information won’t come up in a typical conversation. Sometimes, all it takes is a little intentionality.
Some of these questions are targeted at the older generation. Cater them to whomever is on your mind.
Some Suggestions:
What did you like to do when you were little?
How did you get to school?
What was your favorite school subject and why?
What was your favorite movie/song growing up?
What did you want to be when you grew up?
What did you do for particular holidays? Did you have any specific family traditions? Where did you celebrate and with whom?
If they are or were married, ask how they met. Was it love at first sight, or did someone need some coaxing?
What was their favorite vacation?
What is their favorite color?
What makes them happiest? Do they love peace and quiet? Being around family? Cooking? Traveling? Gardening?
What is something you would like to do?
To see and be seen.
Many of these questions are so simple, yet it might be surprising how little is known. If asked of someone from an entirely different generation, in particular, you may come away with newfound respect or interest.
I really hope this encourages a sweet dialog between you and this person on your mind. Let’s be those who reach out and let others into our lives.
